Personal Note: I really enjoy working with black and white drawings. Hopefully it causes one to focus on the detail of the drawing and allows the eyes to imagine the color.

Seeing people smile as they view a drawing of their favorite pet brings great satisfaction to me. Each drawing in an enjoyable adventure and challenge as I try to capture each animals personality.

Mr. Robert C. Wittig

I first discovered Bangor, Michigan in 1974, when I married. My wife's very extended family lived and continues to live in the area; Bangor, Breedsville, Lawrence, South Haven, and many points between, as it is a large family.

A ritual developed almost immediately. We would drive out for the weekend from Chicago, and after stopping at my mother and father-in-law's farm, and visiting briefly, I would jump back into the car, alone, and go off exploring; driving the back roads, junk shops, yard sales, barn sales, antique shops, just seeing and learning Van Buren County.

This continued for 19 years, until in 1994, when I had a stroke, and was hospitalized for a long while, and then, a long while at home, unable to return to work, spent in rehabilitation.  In January 1996, I began to paint, and get around a little, and begun once again to visit Bangor, this time with a sketch pad.

In late fall, on Sunday afternoon, the corner of Monroe and Railroad street can become suddenly quite. The antique mall had just closed, and I was stashing my purchases in my trunk of my old rusty Pontiac.  I could feel the train coming before I could see it.  I needed a camera to capture reference photos, I'm not quick enough to sketch a moving freight train. After the train passed, heading north, the Bangor Elevator was revealed, strangely beautiful against the evening sky. I photographed the building, and made some sketches, sitting against the trunk of my car. No-one passed, parked around the corner as I was.  It was dark by the time I finished my sketches, and deep winter by the time I finished the two paintings. back in Chicago.

I am very pleased that the city of Bangor has seen fit to accept these paintings, for publication on their Website.  I hope that the citizens of Bangor will enjoy viewing my work, as much as I have enjoyed visiting their city, for twenty-five years, and counting. Thank you.
