Early Bangor Dentist
Dr. Joseph Campbell settled in Bangor and opened up his offices to practice dentistry in 1932. His office was located above Karsten's Drug Store, now the location of Swantra's Drug Store. Dr. Campbell practiced in these offices until 1953 when he retired.
He was a member of the Air Force Dental Corps from 1942 until 1946. He was Village President from 1941 until 1942 when he left for the service. Dr. Campbell is a member of the Lakeland Valley Dental Society, the Michigan State Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. Dr. Campbell is active is many organizations, among them are The American Legion, Michigan Association for the Blind, and Saint Vincent dePaul Society.
Dr. Campbell's wife, Josephine Campbell, taught here in the Bangor Schools for 19 years. Dr. and Mrs. Campbell are the parents of three children, Robin Campbell of Saint Joseph, Mich., Mrs. Jack (Nancy) Redmond, Parchment, Mich. and Richard T. Campbell of Tinley Park III.

Dr. Koch graduated from the Emory University School of Dentists in Atlanta, Georgia, and opened his dental office in Bangor on June 16, 1954.
Dr. Koch was born in Japan of missionary parents and lived in Japan fro fifteen years. He speaks Japanese and German.
He is on the staff of South Haven Hospital, a member of the Kalamazoo Valley Dental Society, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society. He is also a member of the Bangor Seventh Day Adventist Church, listed in Who's Who is the Midwest, and a past president of Bangor Kiwanis Club.
His interests include sports, music, travel and photography. He plays tennis and golf, and has won several awards for his skiing in Colorado. He plays the violin and is a member of Andrew University Chamber Music Group. He gives travelogue lectures.
Dr. Koch and his wife, Erna Mae, have two children. their daughter , Ruth Jo Anne, is a senior in Pre-Med at Andrews University, is a president of the graduating class, and has been accepted at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Their son Gerald, is a junior at Andrews Academy in Berrien Springs.
Gordon Salm LaVanway was born April 15, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois, son of Gordon and Mildred Salm LaVanway.
A graduate of Paw Paw High School, he entered the school of Dentistry at the University of Michigan in 1956, and graduated with the degree of D.D.S. in 1960. In June, 1960 he began the practice of general dentistry in Bangor, at 205 Union Street.
In January, 1962, he joined Dr. Joseph Cooper in the newly completed Cooper Medical Building on M-43 west and practiced dentistry there until November, 1973, when moved his practiced into his own building on C.R. 681 South, where he is presently located.
Dr. LaVanway is a member of Coffinbury Lodge 204 F & AM of which he was twice Worshipful Master. He is a member of Bangor Lions Club and has been active in the Youth Exchange Program hosting several students over the past five years.
In June, 1961, he married Beverly Woodley. The LaVanways live in Bangor Heights Subdivision with their three children, Robert, Sheri, and Jon.
Dr. LaVanway's main hobbies have been hunting and fishing. |
