Early Bangor Doctors
Dr. Joel Camp, M.D.
Came here from New York in 1846. He practiced medicine in Bangor for 55 years from 1846 until 1901.
Dr. James E. Ferguson, M.D.
Graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He came to Bangor from New York in 1866. He served two terms in Michigan State Legislature. He died in 1903.
Dr, John L. Cross, M.D.
Dr. Cross graduated from Cincinnati Medical College in 1872. He practiced in Bangor 1877 - 1883. He died in 1883
Dr. N.A. Williams, M.D.
He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1883. He came to Bangor in 1897 and practiced medicine here for many years.
Edwin G. Low, M.D.
Dr. Low is pictured on left. On the right is Jay D. Naftzer, Station Master for many years.
Dr. Low practiced medicine in the area from 1898 to 1943. He retired at age of 82.
He was born in Oneida, New York. His family moved to Parma, Michigan when he was five years old. He grew up there and was graduated from Marshall High School.
In 1889 he married Miss Lillian Norcross in Rockford, Illinois. He entered the Hanneman Medical college of Homeopathy in Chicago, received his degree in 1898.
Dr. James Murphy, M.D.
Dr, James Murphy was the father of Dr. N.D. Murphy. He was born in Ireland. Came to Bangor in 1900 and practiced medicine until his death in 1906.

Dr, Avision Gano, M.D.
Dr, Avision Gano graduated from the University of Illinois with an M.D. degree in 1934. He came to Bangor in 1936 and established his first office above Swanstra's Drug Store. In 1951 he moved his office to its present location in West Monroe Street.
Dr. Gano has been a member of the Staff at South Haven Community Hospital since 1936. He was also a member of the staff at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo for some time.
Dr, Gano served several years during World War II in the Army Medical Corps, with the Army Air Corps, as 1st Lieutenant and Captain.
He did a lot of surgical operations at South Haven Community Hospital in earlier years but gave up surgery and obstetrics several years ago. He has practiced medicine in Bangor for 41 years and is still practicing on a limited basis.
Dr. Gano is married to the former Maude Gronevelt. They have two children, Mrs. Marian Riley of Crystal Lake Illinois, and Walter, who is a veterinarian in California.
Dr. Goss has joined Dr. Gano this year and is practicing medicine in Bangor at Dr. Gano's office.
Dr. Gano is a member of the Bangor Kiwanis Club, and of Simpson United Methodist Church.
Dr. Norman D. Murphy
Dr. Norman Dwight Murphy graduated from Ann Arbor Medical College in 1904. He served in the army as captain from 1914 - 1918. After World War I he practiced medicine in Bangor until his death July 17, 1951.
His father, Dr. James Murphy, practiced medicine in Bangor from
1900 - 1906.

Dr. Giffen
The last of the "horse & Buggy" doctors, Dr. Giffen came to Bangor on October 19, 1897 at the age of 24. He had to grow a beard to cover his youthful appearance and inspire a confidence in his patients.
His offices were the front upstairs rooms of the Harvey Block above what is now Maaike's Boutique. In about 1945, with failing health, he moved them to his home on the corner of Union and Division Streets, where he continued to practice until a month before his death on July 2, 1956.
He received his M.D. degree from Willamette University in Oregon.
In April, 1899, he married Miss Mary Slawson of Bangor. They had one daughter, Marian.
Dr Giffen was a life member of Coffinbury Lodge No. 204 F & AM, and of Bangor Kiwanis Club which on December 30, 1943, presented him with a "Tribute to the Living" for outstanding service to the community.
In his early practice, Dr,. Giffen went by horse and buggy or sleigh for house calls. He walked often to homes in town and even hopped a train in Bangor to ride to Breedsville to make calls when the roads were impassable and await the next train back. His early emergency surgical cases were put by stretcher into the baggage car of the train and taken to Grand Rapids, which was much faster then by horse and buggy to Kalamazoo.
Fees at the time were 50 cents for a call on the south side of the river and 75 cents on the north side. A complete maternity case was $5.00. In his 62 years of practice he delivered three generations of babies.
Dr. M.C. Cronin, M.D.

Dr. Delbert H. Cole, Dentist
Practice in Bangor for a great many years. His office was located on the second floor of the Harvey Block, on the corner of Monroe and Railroad Streets. No dates were available as to when he came to Bangor or when he died. He was still practicing at the time of his death.

Dr. & Mrs. Morrison
Dr, Edger L. Morrison, a 1903 graduate of University of Michigan Medical School, came to Bangor community in 1915. He was a farmer for three years on land now owned by Mr. & Mrs. Leon Wright.
He served Bangor as a doctor from 1917 until 1954 when he retired and moved to California. He died in Nevada City, California in 1972, at age 92.
Dr. Morrison was a Boy Scout leader for many years and an active member of Simpson Methodist Church. He was an authority on wild flowers, birds, and sand dunes of this area.
Mrs. Morrison also graduated from U of M in 1903, with a major in languages.
The Morrisons' daughter, Elizabeth, was a WAC officer during World War II. She was a teacher in South Haven and other Michigan schools before moving to California where she taught for several years before retiring.
Their son, Donald L. Morrison, is retired from trucking business and lives in Kalamazoo.

Dr. Cooper
Dr. Joseph E. Cooper came to Bangor in 1953 and was associated with Dr. Avison Gano until 1957 when he opened his own office, In 1961 he built a medical building just west of Bangor on Highway M-43. He closed his practice in Bangor on November 15, 1975. Dr. Copper is presently working in the emergency room facility of Memorial Hospital in St. Joseph, Michigan.
Dr. Copper graduated from Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1951 with an M.D. degree. He served six years in the Navy during World Was II and after. He was a Lieutenant in the Navy Medical Corps for two years.
He has three daughters and a son. He and his wife, Lois, Live at 210 Lincoln Street in Bangor.
Dr. Copper is a member of the Bangor United Methodist Church and of Bangor Kiwanis Club.

Picture was taken in 1912 or 1913 in a hotel in Bangor. It shows Dr. Giffen, Mr. Austin, Will Hamilton, Dr. Adam Schaefer, and Dr. Cole. The identity of the other man is not known.
